Scope Of Work

National Grid Keyspan Chelsea River Crossing in East Boston, MA. BORTECH was contracted to install 1,800 feet of 24” Steel Gas Main under the Chelsea River. The purpose of the project was to relocate the gas main to a deeper elevation to allow for the river to be dredged. The new depth for the gas main at 100 feet was in a solid rock formation.

This project was performed with a much smaller footprint than industry standards. BORTECH fabricated a trolly fifth wheel to accomplish setting up the equipment. The horizontal right of way on this project was limited from the city buildings and property lines. And the vertical tolerances between existing underground utilities were less than recommended industry standards. The drill design geometry and existing utilities required the drill to be within 5 feet of an existing 60-inch sewer main.

?At the completion of the drill, BORTECH fabricated pipe sections to launch and receive a smart pig to record the integrity and gauge of the installed gas main.?
