Scope Of Work

Since the devastating floods caused by Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans back in 2005, the area has been without a VA hospital to care for the 70,000 veterans who live in southeastern Louisiana. Many veterans traveled to Birmingham, Houston or further to reach another VA hospital.

Their wait is now over with the opening of the new, New Orleans VA Medical Center.

AECO Interiors of New Orleans, one of the 20 locations of Acousti Engineering Company of Florida, is proud to have beenable to work on such an important structure. The scope of the VA hospital included nine buildings, approximately two million sq. ft., and a unique design. The hospital was built "upside-down," so to speak. Crucial infrastructure that'll keep the building running in the event of a major weather disaster was built on the fourth level, not in the basement, as is the case with many hospitals.

Overall, the campus will include 200 inpatient beds, 370 outpatient exam rooms, 21 procedural suites, ambulatory clinics, emergency and imaging departments, mental health services, patient education facilities, transitional living and outpatient rehabilitation, parking garages, a central energy plant and a research building. For the VA hospital, AECO worked specifically on the ceilings, including drywall and all specialties. We used Armstrong (Acoustical and Drywall Ceilings), Hunter Douglas (Metal Ceilings) and Norton (Wood Ceilings) for different areas of the VA hospital. One unique aspect to this project was itssize. There were many specialty ceilings for this project, including one wood ceiling that spanned close to a quarter-mile in a single run. This type of ceiling installation required many skilled workers to be on site and on deck. The results truly show the hard work that went into crafting this essential medical facility.

This project was a great success for AECO Interiors of New Orleans, as they were able to complete such an important and impactful project for the veterans of New Orleans and the surrounding areas of southeastern Louisiana.
