Scope Of Work
This was a design/build project where Opcon was the General Contractor and Bancroft engineering performed the design. The 54 car parking lot expansion at the Chicago Air Route Traffic Control Center, which serves O’Hare International Airport. The scope included engineering and architectural design; site grading; excavating and installation/relocation of underground utilities, back filling, soil testing and remediation; pouring concrete curb, gutter and pavement, including signage, striping, lighting and landscaping.
During the design process, conflicts between original as-built drawings and marked utility locations were discovered. Opcon utilized hydro excavation techniques, temporary service connections and stringent safety controls to relocate utility lines and maintain services at this 24/7 facility. Utility plans, site grading and parking elevations were redesigned. Further, soil testing revealed large quantities of contaminated soil, the disposal of which would have increased costs substantially. Opcon recommended and obtained approvals for on-site disposal by creating landscaping berms saving the FAA over $200,000.00 in removal of contaminated soils.
