Scope Of Work

Allegrone Masonry was hired as the General Contractor by Saint John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown, Massachusetts for the substantial restoration project, which was performed in three phases over the course of two years. Originally contacted in the fall of 2005 by church officials because of multiple water issues, Allegrone teamed up with an engineering firm to perform a building-wide comprehensive report.

The report outlined specific problem areas and summarized the results by location, priority and price. This matrix aided church officials and parishioners in relating their financing needs to specific repairs required for both the short-term and long-term effort of restoring and preserving their stone church.

Repairs ranged from repointing, replacing gable end capstones and installing thru wall flashing, restoring bell tower louvers by either epoxy injections or historic replacement, and correcting improperly installed roof and gutter systems. Allegrone also modified the stained glass window jamb flashing details and performed minor repairs to the windows themselves where necessary.

Major restoration was performed on the belltower while maintaing daily access to the church for masses and functions. The scope of work involved removing the deteriorated stone pier caps and a complete rebuild of the six feet of the belltower parapet wall. All of the existing stones were reinstalled in their original location above the new thruwall flashing and hidden gutter system. A heat trace system was installed throughout the building at all gutters and downspouts. Localized grout injection was performed to fill voids in the masonry walls in lieu of a complete wall reconstruction.

The main sanctuary floor joist framing was repaired due to damage caused by years of water infiltration through the masonry, broken concrete sidewalks panels were replaced, and sections of the building's interior and exterior were painted. Allegrone Masonry completed this labor intensive project in 2007 and currently works with the St. John's Church Vestry under a yearly maintenance contract on this recently restored building.
