Scope Of Work

Description:

Specialized Engineering (SE) is providing Geotechnical Exploration and Field Testing Services for the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) Office of Materials Technology (OMT) for transportation projects located throughout the State of Maryland.

Scope of Services Included in Open End Contract:

SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS: SE and team members are providing drilling and sampling needs for characterizing soil, rock, and groundwater conditions, including split-barrel sampling, Shelby tube sampling, bulk sampling, rock coring, pressure meter testing, field permeability testing, installation of water observation wells and piezometers, and installation of inclinometers and various SHA project sites.

Soil, Rock and Geosynthetic Material Testing:  SE is providing all testing needed for classification of soils in accordance with AASHTO and ASTM. Testing services include the following: Strength and compressibility via unit weight, unconfined compressive strength, and consolidation testing, moisture-density relationship testing and California Bearing Ratio testing, unit weight and unconfined compressive strength of rock cores. Additionally, SE is providing testing of concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and binder materials, and currently is providing such services under an MLT contract with SHA.

Geophysical and Other Non-Destructive Material Testing:  SE will utilize in-house capabilities for conducting electrical resistivity and refraction seismic surveys for this contract. We have found these surveys to be of particular benefit for characterization of subsurface conditions in karst geology such as is present in Frederick County.

Specialty Consulting Services:  SE will be providing special consulting services for this contract, including: 1) Evaluation of karst geologic conditions using aerial mapping, geophysical survey methods; air-track drilling, and conventional geotechnical borings; 2) providing evaluation of diatomaceous soils conditions using special field and laboratory testing techniques; 3) providing evaluation of optional methods for stabilizing soils using geogrids/geotextiles and aggregate, and chemical stabilization, including lime and cement; and 4) evaluation of failing structures, failing slopes, and failing pavements.

Geotechnical Reports:  SE will be providing Geotechnical Reports in support of task assignments, as required for this contract. Geotechnical Reports will provide data, data analyses, foundation design recommendations, specifications and quantities. SE has specialized software to assist with geotechnical related calculations, including GSTABL for evaluation of slope stability, DRIVEN for analysis of compression and tension piles, and LPile for evaluation of laterally-loaded piles and piers.

INITIAL TASK ORDER: US Route 50 from Lomax St. to Dutchman’s Ln. The scope of work included drilling a total of twenty-five (25) stormwater management (SWM) auger borings and twenty-four (24) pavement auger borings within the ROW of US Route 50, from Lomax Street to Dutchman’s Lane in Easton, MD.
