Scope Of Work

Forrester Construction‘s renovation of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History included building new spaces and updating of MEP systems.  Part of the Smithsonian Institution, The National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) is dedicated to inspiring curiosity, discovery and learning through its unparalleled research, collections, exhibitions and education outreach programs.

The NMNH project, located on the National Mall, consisted of new exhibit spaces and the renovation of education, library, office, lab and childcare areas within the more than 100 year-old main building. Construction features include telescopic theater seating, a glass-enclosed focused investigation area, modern collection-storage systems and millwork window seating.

The scope included extensive hazardous materials abatement, general and specialized demolition, micropile foundations for the new mezzanine and other structural modifications to support specialized artifact storage systems. New HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, IT and A/V systems were provided. Work locations received modern blast-rated window systems, concrete topping slabs and extensive restoration to the historic plaster walls, beams and columns.
