Scope Of Work
Hastings College hired Hawkins to build an architecturally innovative art center that houses studios, classrooms, community programming, an art gallery, and public seating for glass demonstrations and other visual arts. This building has become a premier arts center for the region.
Built of structural steel and a load-bearing CMU frame, this 26,600 SF facility was carefully designed to portray an industrial look with open ceilings and exposed polished concrete floors. The building has a 4,640 SF glass-blowing studio, student classrooms, and plenty of art-inspired features, such as a custom-made metal light fixture in the lobby. An abstract-shaped metal scrim system is installed on the exterior façade.
According to the glass blowing equipment manufacturers, this facility is the largest and best equipped glass studio in the country, as far as universities and colleges go.
The metalwork shop includes three welding bays so students can work continuously, and the woodshop was upgraded with additional space and equipment to reduce down-time for students.
The new facility also provided dramatic safety improvements by providing movable ventilation hoods for each studio to exhaust fumes caused by solvents and industrial ammonia.
