AirportLink Metrorail

Project Information

Project Location:
FL
Status:
Completed
Structure Type:
Terminal - Airport / Bus / Railroad

Scope Of Work

Community Asphalt participated through a joint venture in this project.

The AirportLink, an elevated railway, is the only metrorail in full service in the State of Florida and is the fastest mode of transportation in Miami-Dade. It has a network of 22 stations and 36 km long, spanning from South Miami, through the center of the city, to the northeast portion of Miami-Dade County. This system was elevated due to the presence of a high water table in southern Florida.

The Miami Intermodal Center (MIC) is a project that has been undertaken adjacent and connecting to the Miami International Airport (MIA), South Florida’s top economic generator. The MIC will provide a central hub where multiple modes of transportation will be available to travelers visiting the Miami area. The MIC has already opened its rental car facility, providing a multitude of rental car options to the traveling public all under one roof. The MIC will provide travelers access to Greyhound bus system, metro and tour buses, shuttles, taxis, Amtrak train and regional rail systems. Once this collection of transportation options is achieved, they are jointly expected to remove an estimated 30 % of the vehicular and shuttle traffic previously found at the airport terminals.

This elevated railway was a project full of challenges and successes with the intent set on improving the accessibility of the City’s airport in Miami, facilitating comfortable and fast transportation.

During its construction an occupational risk prevention plan was upheld, based on OHL's zero accident principle applied to all its projects, in order to ensure that each employee returns home in the same conditions in which he went to work.

Thanks to this commitment, more than two million hours without leave-producing accidents were achieved and OHL's occupational risk prevention policy was awarded by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) with the VPP Star Status prize for its occupational safety excellence evidenced during the construction of the project.

Our team believes that when we enter an area to commence construction, we should not only leave behind infrastructure improvements, but social improvements as well. In the roughly three years in took to construct the project, 550 direct employees, 5,750 indirect employees and more than 65 outsourced companies were required. The project contributed to the development of the areas in which it is located, generating more than 600 million dollars. In addition, we planned and participated in several community outreach programs, including community awareness programs at local schools, home rehabilitations in the surrounding area, coastal cleanup efforts, a toy drive for the local children, and a free Thanksgiving turkey distribution for families.
