How did Bluewater get its name?
Chris and Todd were born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. They were raised to embrace the culture and diversity of the region, and especially enjoyed all the opportunities for outdoor recreation and adventure. One of their most memorable and exciting was offshore fishing.
Offshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico is a popular activity and was one of their Dad’s favorite pastimes. The Mississippi River dumps dirty brown water into the Gulf of Mexico, which provides a tremendous amount of food and nutrients to fish and aquatic animals at the lower end of the food chain. But, it also requires fisherman interested in hooking and hoisting a big fish to travel 40 to 60 miles offshore to reach a location where the dirty brown waters of the Mississippi converge with the beautiful crystal clear aqua of the Gulf creating a contrasting seam against “bluewater.”
At this convergence point there’s a difference in water temperature, and very often it traps debris and drift floating around the Gulf. Fisherman could go from dirty brown water with zero visibility and when gazing just past the flotsam line (within 20 yards) you could see fifty feet down.
"Bluewater" is where the fish are … lots of them big, scary, large schools and always sharks! Chris and Todd caught wahoo (lemon fish), amberjack, jack cravel, king mackerel, tuna, bluefish, dolphin and sharks. Their journey to the "Bluewater" was difficult. It took a large boat and extra fuel. They had to leave the day before and sleep on the boat at night. Back then it was something very few people did. When Chris and Todd were children this was always a big and exciting adventure. And will always remember this as some of the best fishing and most memorable experiences while venturing out past the muddy water and debris to the bluewater!
