It is similar to leaving an oven door open and feeling the heat radiating from the oven without being in direct contact. Radiant floor heating systems are popular with homeowners because they offer distinct advantages over other heating systems.

 

The Benefits of Radiant Floor Heating

?        It is more effective at distributing balanced air than standard (forced-air) HVAC systems.

A More Balanced Approach

When using an HVAC system it is nearly impossible to keep the floors warm. Forced-air systems also distribute air in a directional manner, so it’s quite possible for a larger room to be warm around the vents but nowhere else. Two Types of Radiant Floor Heating Systems

Radiant heating systems come in two forms:

?        Electric Radiant Heat. This type of heating system features electric cables that are looped. The cables produce heat either during target hours (evening or early morning) or continuously at the homeowner’s discretion. Electric heating works best in homes that contain hard flooring such as concrete or tile. Electric radiant heat works well as a supplement to HVAC systems in key areas where the floor may be coldest such as a bathroom or kitchen.

?        Hydronic Radiant Heat. Water-based systems have proven to be highly efficient and can cover larger areas more effectively than electric radiant heat. Just like electricity runs through an electric system, hot water is channeled through tubes in a hydronic radiant heater. All the tubes are connected to a hot water boiler that is controlled by a thermostat. Hydronic systems can be installed within a home’s foundation or just below the surface with an additional layer.
