Scope Of Work

More than a century ago, a country club was started at a location named La Cumbre, or “high summit” by Spanish settlers.  The La Cumbre Country Club was born, and since has become a fixture in our community.  In 1929, world-renown architect George Washington Smith was commissioned to build the Clubhouse, now a fine example of classic Santa Barbara architecture.

As La Cumbre Country Club grew, the need for larger tennis and fitness facilities became apparent.  The existing fitness area was housed in the basement of the clubhouse and had become much too small for membership.  In addition, the tennis center was older and in need of renovation, so the membership decided to combine the two in a new state of the art Tennis and Fitness Center.

Due to the historic value of the Clubhouse, it was vital that this facility was designed and built to match the original.  The design team, committee, and Armstrong Associates worked diligently to match new materials to existing interior and exterior materials at the Clubhouse, including Saltillo tiles, plaster finishes, and wood materials and finishes.  More importantly, the architectural details including arches, mosaic tile stairways, wood balconies, and wrought iron were designed and built upholding the historic tradition of the Clubhouse.

The La Cumbre Tennis and Fitness Center is now a state of the art facility and includes a Yoga Studio, Massage Room, Tennis Shop, Men’s and Women’s Locker Rooms, and 3,000 square feet of fitness area, but the end goal achieved was building all of this in a facility that looks like it has been there for nearly a century.
