Scope Of Work
Wagman’s Geotechnical Construction group provided multiple design-build services for the renovation and expansion of the Marie Reed School in Washington, D.C. Wagman installed 109 hollow bar micropiles for new interior column foundation support. Two columns were lifted and the footings removed, thus allowing the columns to extend down 10’ onto new footings and a new deep foundation system. Additionally, Wagman selected hollow bar micropiles for adjacent support of the pool area which had unknown structural capacities. Forty-five caissons, 36” diameter each, were installed to support new exterior structures. Temporary support of excavation was also installed in required areas around the site.
The project utilized micropiles, drilled shafts, excavation support and a column lift.
KEY CHALLENGES & PROJECT DETAILS
Extremely tight site and difficult drilling conditions for drilled shafts and micropiles.
Micropiles were installed inside existing building with eight feet of head room.
Column was jacked and held in place while existing foundation was removed and replaced.
