Our Story
Mr. Excavator was founded by William A. Flesher in 1957. Bill or “Red” as his friends would like to call him had developed his skills as a heavy equipment operator working in the Salt Mines thousands of feet beneath Lake Erie. He saw having his own business as a better way to care for his young family and accepted the risk and opportunity of starting a small excavation company to service the expanding housing market on Cleveland’s near east side. For years Bill worked tirelessly as an equipment operator by day and an estimator by night building the reputation of his name and business. His first commercial projects included excavation for his parish - St Anselm’s Catholic Church and the initial groundbreaking of Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio.
Mr. Excavator Inc. was registered with the State of Ohio as a business in 1962. The name and logo were the result of a friendly conversation between Bill had and a retired sign painter, Davis. Together they created a name and image so appropriate to the excavation industry that has stood the test of time. Over fifty years later, the logo with Bills profile depicted in the capital letter “E”, the unique font, and the company’s name have remained unchanged.
Although Bill passed on in 2012 his example of honesty, hard work and commitment to providing excellence solidified Mr. Excavator's reputation of being able to deliver trusted quality service to its customers. Second and third generation managers carry on by taking the same pride in Bill’s philosophy to always give the customer more than what they expect. His tireless effort to build a solid foundation and reputation lives on with every project we are given the opportunity to serve.
