Scope Of Work

The Clark/Byrne, A Joint Venture project team worked closely with the City of San Antonio, Jacobs, and Parsons+Corgan to deliver the $158 million Terminal B at San Antonio International Airport (SAIA).  between two active terminals and a roadway project, Clark/Byrne carefully coordinated with the affected parties to ensure the airport could operate smoothly during construction.

The Clark/Byrne team constructed the new terminal, a new central utility plant, and consolidatedthe airport's baggage handling systems. The 225,000 square-foot Terminal B has eight gates and four levels.

The concrete structure with a structural metal roof features a louver-type system on the front of the building to provide shade in the afternoon and keep direct sunlight off ticket counters in the front lobby.

The new 6,000 square-foot central utility plant houses three 1,400-ton chillers, three 4,200-gpm, three-cell cooling towers, six 2,800-gpm chilled water pumps, and three tertiary 4,200 gpm, chilled water pumps. The plant also houses SAIA's building automation system.

The expansion of the existing baggage handling facility allowed the TSA to relocate their screening process to a centralized, fully-automated baggage screening . The project team added 13,000 square feet and installed a new baggage handling system with five screening machines, five outbound make-up units, and two curbside bag check conveyors.

Throughout construction, Clark/Byrne made a concerted effort to account for passengers using active portions of the airport and managed their work to minimize the affects on SAIA's operations. Precise construction phasing and comprehensive pedestrian traffic plans were key to reducing the impact of construction activities. The team also developed a site-specific airport security plan and access control procedures to allow the construction workforce to travel securely through airport operations areas.
