Scope Of Work
Introduction
Dunbar High School in Northwest Washington, D.C., designed by Perkins Eastman
and built by Gilbane, Inc., completed an addition to its athletic facilities which
includes a new gymnasium.
Challenge
The slab of the new gymnasium floor is located above the natatorium, an area with
high humidity. The gym floors are a high-quality wood, which is one of the more
moisture-sensitive flooring materials. In addition, Gilbane built the project with
a very difficult, fast-track construction schedule.
Solution
Perkins Eastman and Gilbane elected to use Hycrete V1000 in the elevated slab to
protect the sensitive wood finishes.
Result
Using Hycrete V1000 enabled the flooring to be installed on time and within the
flooring manufacturer’s recommendation for acceptable moisture content. After
seven days of climate control just prior to the installation of the wood flooring, the
concrete with Hycrete was measuring between 75% and 80% relative humidity
(RH) using in situ probes (ASTM 2170) and 3.0–3.4 lbs/1,000 ft2/24 hours according
to calcium chloride (ASTM F1869) testing. In addition, the owners have warranted
protection and peace-of-mind that the critical areas will be protected.
