Our Story

Sun Country Builders was founded and incorporated in 1979, in Vista, CA, and has been in business continuously since then, with no change in name, licenses, or ownership.

The company developed a focus on affordable multi-family housing in the early 1980’s, building twelve USDA Rural Development agricultural housing projects in remote Southern California locations. In 1987, Sun Country built the second project in the history of the Low Income Tax Credit program in California,

Redondo Apartments in Westmoreland, Imperial County. Since then, Sun Country Builders has been responsible for the construction or rehabilitation of almost one hundred multi-family affordable housing projects, funded through a variety of channels including tax credits, bonds, HUD, and local municipal finance. Along the way, Sun Country has developed a familiarity and competence in all the areas of project administration which come along with affordable finance programs.

Since the early 1980s, Sun Country Builders has delivered unequalled dedication and service to the affordable housing development community. The first affordable projects Sun Country worked on were twelve USDA Rural Development agricultural housing projects in remote areas of Southern California. Those developments were run in the nature of design-build projects, planned and budgeted hand-in-hand with the owner. In 1987, Sun Country built one of the two projects awarded tax credits in the first round of the LIHTC program in California, Redondo Apartments, TCAC# CA-1987-002, in Westmoreland, Imperial County.

Sun Country’s specialization in affordable housing has given the company the opportunity to become thoroughly familiar with the unique processes and requirements of that market niche. Whether a project is financed through tax credits, bonds, HUD, or through city or county channels, Sun Country is well familiar with the procedures and requirements, including HUD documentation, Prevailing Wage procedures, Section 3 requirements, local outreach requirements, and so on. Sun Country has developed disciplined and successful procedures which carefully and completely address all of those requirements.

Sun Country Builders has been responsible for the construction or rehabilitation of almost one hundred multi-family affordable housing projects.
