Our Story
James E. Tague and Co. opened at 10th St. and Columbia Ave. on November 11, 1908. His first hires were two horses and an old friend to drive them in a second-hand lumber lorry. It began a century of the Tagues working with people they like and a fascination with efficient methods of delivering their product to the marketplace. When James married Mary Agnes Stewart in 1898, the couple pledged a commitment to a future that would enable them to support and enjoy their growing family.
When James died suddenly in 1924 Mary refused to abandon her husband’s dream of a family-owned business and as president operated the family lumber business for 30 years while raising ten children. The 1920s proved to be successful and the Tague family firmly established the roots of their company in the city of Philadelphia.
In 1959, the family business became Tague Lumber, Inc., son Joseph L. Tague was named President and one of four employees was his son Vincent J. Tague, Sr. While his grandfather was proficient with his horses, Vince Sr. became the master of the company’s mechanical stable. His care and grooming of the big red trucks is legendary within the business and the family.
The 60s were spurred by tremendous growth. A larger facility was purchased on the corner of Belfield Ave. and High St. in Germantown in 1968. Vince Sr. became President of the company in 1973. Tragically, on Christmas Night, 1975, a fire destroyed the entire yard; undeterred, the Tague family rebuilt a more modern facility and continued to prosper.
Vincent J. Tague, Jr., the fourth generation, joined Tague Lumber in 1985 and led the expansion beyond the Philadelphia city limits. In 1995 Tague acquired Phoenixville Lumber in Chester County, PA. The Phoenixville site allowed Tague to offer custom millwork and state-of-the art door hanging capabilities. In 1998 a third location was added when the Tague family purchased Marshall’s Lumber in Media, PA.
In 2001 Vince Jr. became President of the company, when Vincent Sr. assumed the role of CEO. The company continued to prosper and Tague branched out again in 2004 when the Premier Products Company became the Premier Hollow Metal Door &?Frame Division of Tague Lumber. Premier’s services include full metal welding and fabrication capabilities as well as master keying, jobsite deliveries, and door and hardware takeoff assistance.
Just a few years later in 2009 Tague built a stunning 10,000 sq. ft. Design Showroom in Malvern, PA. This innovative showroom features full displays of: kitchens, baths, windows, doors, hardware, sidings, millwork, mouldings, decks, and more.
Always with an eye to the future, in 2012, Tague Lumber announced the purchase of the old Danby Lumber yard on McFarlan Road in Kennett Square. After spending two years renovating the site, the upgrades were completed in April of 2014 and the facility is now open for business.
As of June 2014, a new Tague Lumber opened on the site of the old Doylestown Lumber yard. After quickly outgrowing the small yard, Tague Lumber of Doylestown relocated a few miles North to 6100 Easton Road.
With over 106 years of business experience to draw on, Tague Lumber continues to meet the challenges of the changing marketplace by offering unsurpassed customer service, fair pricing, quality products, and free delivery by their signature fleet of shiny red trucks.
