Scope Of Work

Overlooking the Salem Common, this circa 1818 home was a gift from Captain Bertram and became the Salem Home for Aged Men. The home had fallen into disrepair when it was closed in 1988, to reopen two years later as the first free-standing assisted living community for men and women in Massachusetts. DeIulis Brothers successfully completed this historic preservation project, which has been recognized by the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the National Trust for Historic Preservation and was notable for the following:

Restoration and replication of interior woodwork

Restoration of 14 fireplaces

Located in a historic and very dense residential neighborhood

Construction activities required a high degree of sensitivity to surrounding homes and neighbors

Featuring a new outside deck leading to a brick courtyard and garden area

Renovation of and addition to the historic home founded by Salem’s famous sea captain John Bertram into the first free-standing assisted living facility in Massachusetts.
