Scope Of Work
855 Battery Street was the nineteenth-century San Francisco headquarters for the candy and cookie manufacturer American Biscuit Company, later National Biscuit Company (Nabisco). The plant was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire, and shortly thereafter the current reinforced concrete building was constructed in its place. After decades of manufacturing sweets, the building now houses the local television station, KPIX.
The application of an impermeable coating in the 1980s left the concrete susceptible to water-damage. Water got in and stayed in, and the resulting concrete deterioration allowed the underlying reinforcements to corrode. ARG Conservation Services was retained to perform a detailed survey and subsequently, to manage a multi-year rehabilitation of the exterior that includes removing unstable coating and previous repairs and applying new patches, coating, and flashing.
