Scope Of Work
Barton Malow provided construction management services for the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital. The replacement hospital increased pediatric inpatient bed capacity, increased birthing capacity to allow 4,500-5,000 births annually, increased surgical capacity, and improved parent and family accommodations creating an environment focused on family-centered care.
Trade Labor Availability
At the time, this was one of the single largest programs ever built in Washtenaw County and on U-M’s campus. The project team was challenged with obtaining enough trade labor to meet the schedule and altered our procurement processes to ensure labor and expertise. We partnered with the right local contractors to pull together teams that could easily coordinate and execute all systems. The team pre-purchased materials to lock in commodity pricing for cost assurance with the GMP. Barton Malow also self-performed metal studs and drywall on four patient floors.
Site Logistics
The tight urban site required off-site staging of trucks, tight sequencing of material deliveries, and staggered start times for trade workers to alleviate congestion that could stall field progress. Planning and logistics accommodated continuous use of the adjacent parking deck, access to the entrance for Labor and Delivery at the existing Women’s Hospital, limited road closures around East Medical Center Drive, and use of all adjacent hospital and campus buildings.
