Black River Restoration

Project Information

Project Location:
Lorain, OH
Status:
Completed - Jan 2011
Structure Type:
Utilities

Scope Of Work

Our team restored approximately 8,200 LF along the lower Black River corridor and restored the habitat to pre-steel mill conditions.

We restored approximately 8,200 LF along the lower Black River corridor and restored the physical conditions of the Black River’s habitat to such that existed prior to operation of the steel mills.

Floodplain and riparian buffers on the property have been significantly altered by past grading and filling activities associated with the steel operations.

The majority of the property was overlain by unconsolidated slag materials that were by-products of the former steel mill.

We Completed the Following Restoration Components for this Project:

• Removed 1,250,929 CY of steel-processing by-product

• Stabilized River Bank using Bioengineering Techniques and native vegetation

• Constructed fish habitat shelves that incorporate a shallow underwater ledge with aquatic vegetation and rock piles

• Removed of an abandoned pump station

• Restored Floodplain which included planting native tree, shrub, and herbaceous vegetation

• Restored Bluff restoration which included re-vegetation with native upland herbaceous and tree species
