5 Ways to Keep Your Marble Floors Looking Brand New

Maintaining the stunning shine of marble flooring can be tough enough in a home. But when dealing with a commercial facility or office building, it’s even tougher. The amount of traffic, and potential for spills that takes place in buildings puts a strain on your floors and can result in long term damage if not attended to quickly and correctly.

Here are 5 expert tips for marble floor care that will help maintain its luster and shine throughout its lifespan:

1.) Get Routine Polishing from Pros

If your floors are new and well taken care of, this tip need not apply. However, the older your marble floors get, the more they require a professional floor polishing. NJ commercial flooring experts like Rafanello Restoration can make your old floors look brand new with a routine polishing.  Bringing back that original shine is something your floors will thank you for.

2.) Use a Cloth, NOT a Mop

If you find spots or stains on your marble, it’s always best to use a soft cloth with a gentle cleaner to rub the stain away. Mopping the entire space can unnecessarily damage the polish and leave your marble looking uneven and dull. The same applies when using a harsh cleaning agent. The key is focusing on just the individual stain. Once that’s done, if you find an overall polishing is in order, we suggest you give the experts at Rafanello Restoration a call to examine your floors.

3.) Clean with Care – Do NOT SCRUB

If you really want to hurt your marble floors, scrub them hard. Most other flooring can withstand more aggressive treatment, but marble’s unique top layer shine can actually come off if scrubbed too hard. So be very careful when tending to your marble. Since marble is extremely smooth, you won’t find any liquids getting stuck in between crevices; therefore, there is nothing to “scrub out”. And remember, if the issue is large enough, and you’re unsure of how to treat it, it’s always safest to consult a professional service like Rafanello Restoration.

4.) Paint the Fence

Confused? If you’ve seen The Karate Kid you won’t be. Instead of “Wax on/Wax off”, with marble floors you must, “Paint the Fence”. This means that marble needs to be cleaned in gentle, straight lines. Unbeknownst to many, cleaning in a circular motion (hence, no “Wax on/Wax off”) will actually damage your marble. So when dealing with marble flooring, remember what Mr. Miyagi said, and “Paint the Fence.”

5.) Don’t Wait on Spills

In order to maintain marble’s natural luster, it’s extremely important to clean any spills right away. Certain liquids - especially those containing acids like orange juice, soda, wine, tomato juice and even tap water - can leave permanent stains when not attended to immediately. The quicker they are cleaned up, the less likely they are to damage your marble long term.

All-in-all, marble is a great flooring option. Its sheer beauty is the reason people love it. But, as you’ve read, there are some unique keys to maintaining that appeal.
