Scope Of Work

After providing extensive preconstruction services, Turner  an ambitious expansion/renovation project for MoMA. The project, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler was  in phases over the course of four years.

Phase I of the project included a dramatic Bauhaus Staircase and 10,000 square feet of exhibit space along with restrooms and coat check services. The fit-out of a data center was constructed as part of Phase II. During Phase III, the project team constructed a 40,000 square foot addition that stands in-place of the Folk Art Museum that Turner demolished at the beginning of the project. Within the addition is gallery space, a box-in-box studio, a café and mechanical support spaces. Phase IV added amenity spaces including a lobby lounge, espresso bar, and retail boutique in the existing museum. A gallery space was added to an adjacent residential tower as part of Phase V. Phase VI consisted of the renovation of the existing museum space while the museum was open to the public. This portion of the project required steel modifications and high-end millwork finishes. An expanded bookstore and a repositioned lobby along with a five-story "blade stair" were a few of the elements incorporated into this phase of the project.

Key to the project’s successful completion was the team’s ability to negotiate complex site logistics without affecting on-going curatorial operations and planned exhibits. As well, the project team took special care to safeguard the public and museum-goers by implementing a comprehensive site safety program that evolved as the project progressed.
