Scope Of Work
The project is a Turnkey energy-efficient upgrade to maximize energy savings while addressing Northport VAMC's infrastructure and operational concerns. The project consists of two Energy Conservation Measures (ECM): ECM-07 Steam Distribution Systems, ECM-10 Distributed Generation. ECM-07 is an upgrade to the steam and condensate piping in the distribution loops throughout the campus and replace mechanical insulation in individual buildings. These upgrades will reduce natural gas consumption and O&M costs and improve the reliability of these systems. ECM-10 is a new 2,000 kW natural gas reciprocating engine with cogeneration waste heat recovery technology at the central boiler plant. The cogeneration plant will maximize utility savings, provide another source of backup power, and improve heating reliability. The plant will co-generate steam and hot water to reduce natural gas usage.
Challenges included working in all kinds of weather while maintaining safety where at times more than 30 welders and laborers were installing new pipe in trenches and inside mechanical rooms. While there were several minor injuries, there were no lost time injuries and neither the VA or OSHA issued any notices of violations.
Our Site Safety and Health Officers (SSHOs) have provided superior service throughout the project. From pointing out unsafe acts and conditions to ensuring workers understood the safety requirements and those of the VA unique to an operating medical center campus.
