Scope Of Work
The Spring Creek Arm of Keswick Reservoir is down gradient from the Iron Mountain Mine and is classified as an EPA Superfund Site. The Spring Creek Arm became contaminated due to pyretic acid mine drainage, which leached out metals in the mine and deposited them in huge piles within the Keswick Reservoir.
In 2003, Kinnetic Laboratories, Inc. provided underwater vibracore sediment sampling services using a portable barge fitted with a quadrapod A-Frame. Kinnetic Laboratories carried out all vibracore sampling for routine cores to 20-feet below ground surface(bgs). In addition, optional cores to 35-feet bgs were obtainable through the use of Kinnetic Laboratories specialized vibracore technology.
Kinnetic Laboratories returned in 2005 to perform further vibracore sampling, in-situ vane shear testing, and special geotechnical coring. A particularly difficult challenge had to be overcome in collecting these sediments for geotechnical testing because the metallic precipitate was very flocculent in nature. Kinnetic Laboratories developed and successfully utilized a highly specialized coring method for the collection of this material in an undisturbed state and without losses for full core recoveries.
