Douglas Day's Bio
Doug is a licensed contractor in the State of California and has extensive experience renovating apartment complexes. Doug was a principal and President with Highland Property Construction, Inc. for almost a decade before resuming Day Builders. He has been involved in the renovation of over 10,000 apartment units located in 9 states (majority located in California).
Doug also has experience as a Principal with Highland Property Development, LLC to redevelop and preserve thousands of apartments and brings that experience to Day Builders’ clients to help them with their construction needs while not competing as a developer but rather as a member of developer’s teams. In so doing, Doug is able to anticipate the developer’s needs regarding construction and the compliance needs of those developments. With such complete affordable housing experience, Day Builders is the go-to General Contractor for your development.
Doug is personally involved in setting up the scopes of work and budgets for each renovation project. Together with Matthew Gross, he oversees Project Managers and project coordination. Doug coordinates project needs with the various representatives from developers, municipalities, funding agencies, architects, etc. Doug uses his experience to help each development team design the scopes of work to fit the needs of each property and value engineer the work to provide the best renovation possible. Doug has a law degree from the University of Baltimore, School of Law. Areas of concentration included contract law, land use and banking law. He has a taught an ICBO (International Conference of Building Officials) course to prepare students to take the building official exam. Doug works with all Day Builders, Inc. personnel to ensure that each renovation project is done professionally and with the utmost care.
Matthew Gross's Bio
Matthew has a proven record of success in all phases of construction. With over 30 years of experience, he is an excellent member of our team, with his ability to respond rapidly to challenging situations with practical and effective solutions. He is skilled in building relationships and communicating with City Planners, Building Officials, HUD Representatives and Redevelopment Representatives, Bank Draw Inspectors along with Owners and Owner Representatives. Matthew is also a Planning Commissioner with the City of Citrus Heights and uses his construction knowledge to help the city.
Matthew Gross began his career in construction over 35 years ago in California. Matthew has provided project management and supervision for projects of all sizes. Project scopes that range from a few days of work to full-scale renovations lasting several months. He has also been involved with projects in diverse areas and locations. He has worked in rural farming communities as well as large urban cities such as San Francisco, Sacramento, and Los Angeles.
In each project Matthew brings not only his knowledge of construction methods and materials but also his skills as straightforward communicator. Matthew is effective in his communications in the field with subcontractors, inspectors and architects. His communication skills are equally effective in public hearings as a Planning Commissioner with the City of Citrus Heights, California and as a contract negotiator during the project bid process. He is very comfortable working with all representatives of a project team including; owners, owner reps., architects, lenders, inspectors, and government agencies.
For over three decades Matthew has earned a reputation in the construction industry as a fair, knowledgeable, and effective project manager. Matthew holds several construction certifications including LEED AP Accredited Professional and Lead Certifications. He also has hundreds of hours in continual education in ADA Accessibility. These certifications in conjunction with his in field experience give him a broad platform to manage projects confidently and effectively.
Having spent nearly twenty years as a finish carpenter understands what the subcontractor needs to perform at their best. Matthew approaches each project not only as a project management professional but with a subcontractor mindset as well. This ability allows him to look at a project both from the subcontractor perspective and the project management perspective. This results in projects that are managed competently and efficiently.
Finally, Matthew is vigorous in his zeal for project safety. With safety as his primary concern both on and off the jobsite Matthew has never been cited by any government agency for a safety violation. Matthew holds accountable members of the project team to do their utmost to ensure project safety. Matthew believes that project safety is everyone’s concern, Matthew will tell you “Safety saves more than money” and Matthew is right.
