Scope Of Work

SITUATION: The Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, Georgia is the home port for Navy Fleet ballistic missile nuclear submarines. The Trident Refit Facility is the largest command at Kings Bay, and at just under five million cubic feet, is the largest covered dry dock in the world. It provides logistics support for the incremental modernization and repair of Trident submarines that circumnavigate the world’s oceans on their global defense mission. This dry dock was in need of some improvements and updates.

SOLUTION: This Design-Build Project was a CMS-led joint venture. Layne performed the majority of the work as a major subcontractor. We performed an extensive renovation of the dry dock’s massive pumps, motors, valves, actuators, flow meters, controls, and gratings while the dock remained fully operational. During project execution, submarines were docked, serviced, and redeployed on a demanding rotational schedule. The Teams’ successful completion of this project ensured the uninterrupted mission of this defensecritical operation.

SERVICES EMPLOYED: Layne’s scope of work included replacement of pumps, actuators, pipe and valves used in the operation of the drydock, and replacement of auxiliary seawater pumps and piping used to cool submarine nuclear reactor. Also included is the refurbishment of a number of pumps, and actuators throughout drydock. Concrete repair consists of urethane crack injection as well as concrete patch repair for delaminated areas of drydock. We also removed nearly 40 tons of sludge from floor drain wetwell.
