Scope Of Work

SITUATION: An aging Indianapolis neighborhood consisting of approximately 800 private residences was being served by individual septic systems. A large percentage of these systems were in varying degrees of failure, resulting in unhealthy sanitary sewage discharges during peak loads and wet weather. This not only contaminated parts of the neighborhood, but as sewage reached creeks in the area it was carried downstream to other areas of the city. In addition to the sanitary issues, many of the neighborhood streets also were in varying levels of disrepair.

SOLUTION: Layne is constructing a $16 million sanitary sewer collection system consisting of 11 miles of 12 inch and 8 inch sanitary main lines, 4 miles of 6 inch service lateral stubs, and a lift station. Once construction is completed, residents will be required to abandon their septic systems and connect their gravity discharge to the new system via their lateral stub. Where grades do not allow for a gravity discharge to the lateral stub, residents will be supplied with an individual grinder pump station as part of the project. Since the entire project was constructed almost exclusively within the limits of existing roadways, final restoration included full-width pavement replacement throughout, along with local replacement of curbs, gutters and sidewalks as required.

Extensive planning was involved to allow for safe construction with large equipment in residential areas while still maintaining access for residents, public service vehicles and commercial vehicles. Traffic control, safe work zone, and material storage and handling were especially stressed in our daily and weekly job planning process. We met personally with each property owner to help them establish the best location for their lateral stub – one that would facilitate their connection to the stub while at the same time allowing for preservation of surface elements important to them.
