Scope Of Work

As part of the Bay Area Rapid Transit’s Measure RR system improvements, two additional staircases will be added to Civic Center/UN Plaza Station at both ends of the station. The staircases will be “scissored” with the existing staircases at the north and south ends of the station to create an interlocking structure that matches the current stairs.

The Civic Center Station Scissor Stairs project work consists of fabricating and installing the two (2) structural steel stairwells with terrazzo concrete flooring, steps and risers, and architectural cladding with integrated lighting from the main concourse level to the BART platform.

The project work also includes an intermediate landing at the SFMTA MUNI level to match the existing stairwell, and to increase pedestrian capacity and flow into and out of the Civic Center BART Station.

Ghirardelli is providing construction management services for the project. The project work includes associated demolition, structural elements, and architectural finishes. Electrical work includes new overhead and handrail lighting.

The work for the Civic Center Station Scissor Stairs project is being performed while the station remains in operation. Temporary barriers have been constructed around the work zones in order to protect customers and workers during construction.
