This small two family house was transformed from two small one bedroom apartments to two spacious two story 3 bedroom units within the same but rearranged volume, each with their own outdoor spaces. By incorporating the basement and the attic into living space we used the space much more efficiently. 
Our sustainable strategies included optimal solar collection. The roof was designed with the optimal angle for solar collection. Passive heat and thermal solar collectors heat the domestic hot water and the space via radiant heat in concrete floors. A very well insulated envelope with super insulated R-40 walls, R-60 roofs, high performance windows as well as heat recovery ventilation reduce heating/cooling needs. For water conservation a large tank collects rain water for irrigation. Only very few dumpsters were filled during construction because of intense separation of demolition debris for reuse in this construction that provided many of the materials used in this house.
