Our Story
In 1976, Jay Mills bought his first dozer from his older brother Jerry. This was a 1953 D7 cable dozer. During this time Jay worked full-time for Brown & Root at Comanche Peak, it was after his full-time job in the evenings and on weekends that Jay ran his D7. Later on, in November 1979, Jay bought a D8 cable dozer and left his full time employment with Brown & Root. His new business, Jay Mills Soil Conservation Contracting was born.
Jay was now in the full-time business of building stock ponds, clearing brush, heavy disc work, root plowing and site work for the surrounding farmers and ranchers. In 1980, he was awarded his first government contract with Soil Conservation Services repairing drainage structures at Lake Leon Dam in Eastland County. One year later, in 1981, the business was incorporated and the name was changed to what you see today: Jay Mills Contracting, Inc.
In 1984, JMC received pre-qualification for Texas Department of Highway & Public Transportation (Now Texas Department of Transportation). As JMC continued to grow into 1986, Jay decided that a permanent shop and offices were necessary. They are the offices still in use today on US Highway 377 in Stephenville, Texas. In 1993, Jay’s only son Toby took control of the company when he was named President of Jay Mills Contracting, Inc. To this day JMC continues to grow and expand in many directions.
