Scope Of Work
When little people have big problems, The Children’s Center is there to help them. A safe place for children who have suffered trauma, abuse, or have special needs, The Children’s Center needed its new facility to be calm, comforting, and welcoming to children and their families.
When this state-of-the-art mental healthcare facility chose a historic school for its new headquarters, Big-D helped transform it into a modern space to serve the patients. The historic structure was designed by Rickard Kletting, designer and architect for the Utah State Capitol building, and was originally dubbed the Oquirrh School when it opened as a public elementary in 1894. To make this structure meet the customer’s needs, we overhauled all major systems, including electrical, mechanical, and fire protection systems, without compromising the external structure. The structure has been completely renovated from the inside out, resulting in a safe, modern facility within a historic exterior.
The remarkable finished space boasts classrooms, play areas, counseling offices, a kitchen, restrooms, and a playground, all designed with kids in mind. On the top floor of the building, a huge indoor play space is tucked under the ceiling beams, giving children space to play in bad weather. The building complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act and received a LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
