Scope Of Work
When United Steel Deck wanted to become more competitive in the upper Midwest region, it called on The Austin Company to help find a location and build a new manufacturing plant and office building.
After locating a site, special design considerations were taken to compensate for unfavorable soil conditions. On-site materials were lime-modified to obtain the required soil-bearing pressure to support 5,000 pounds-per-square-foot (psf) floor design loads for steel-coil storage areas.
The steel-frame manufacturing facility is equipped with crane girders to support eight independent bridge crane systems. The wall system consists of field-erected insulated metal panels and a seven-foot-high concrete-block sill wall. The roof is a standing-seam insulated metal roof over a metal deck supported by a bar-joist system. Metal fiber-reinforced concrete floors vary in thickness to support loads up to 5,000 psf.
The structural system is unique — the facility’s owner fabricated and supplied joists, joist girders, metal deck, roof and siding panels, girts and insulation.
The project was completed in just one year and came in under budget.
