Scope Of Work
Bernards was builder for the Dr. Theodore T. Alexander Jr. Science Center School, located next to the California Science Center. Contemporary architectural details by world-renowned Morphosis Architects were integrated into the restoration/renovation design, resulting in an impressive 130,000 SF educational facility that includes a theater, multi-purpose room, play area, classrooms and science laboratories. The separate, newly renovated Wallis Annenberg Building for Science Learning and Innovation houses eight classrooms, administrative offices, multi-purpose room, and the school library.
Reflecting LAUSD’s commitment to sustainable design, the north building of the new educational complex has a fully planted and landscaped roof. The award-winning project included the adaptive re-use of the Los Angeles Armory, a Classical Revival-style structure built in 1914.
Structural and seismic upgrades to the original structure were included in the project, along with a new basement-level concourse, parking areas, and classrooms.
