The historic Placer County Courthouse, located in Auburn, California, was experiencing issues of noise intrusion and speech intelligibility within several of the courtrooms. Extant Acoustical performed an evaluation of the exterior to interior noise level intrusion within the space; as well as, a full complement of architectural acoustic testing to evaluate speech intelligibility issues within the courtrooms. Ultimately the issues experienced within the courtroom were determined to be a combination of mechanical noise generated by the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment, long reverberation times within the spaces due to hard surface finishes and poorly functioning sound reinforcement systems. Extant provided optimization of the existing sound reinforcement system and recommended treatment programs to address both the mechanical noise, and the long reverberation times within the space.
