Scope Of Work
The work includes removing and replacing the existing pavement from the I-5/SR 14 Interchange north for 15.8 miles. Atkinson has separated the project into north and south segments. The south segment consists of the first four miles from the I-5/SR 14 interchange and includes working behind temporary barrier to complete stages 1-4. Once staged construction is complete, the team will begin lane pavement and panel replacements during night and weekend closures. The north segment includes the remaining 12 miles of work and consists of lane pavement and panel replacement during numerous night and weekend closures. Atkinson will complete the panel replacement scope of work using precast panels and construct the lane pavement replacement using rapid-set concrete. Major quantities on the project include: 350k CY of Roadway / Concrete Excavation, 60k CY of Class 3 Aggregate Base, 60k CY of Lean Concrete / Rapid Set Lean Concrete Base, 13.5k TN of Asphalt Paving, 55k CY of Concrete Paving, 164k CY of Rapid Set Concrete Paving, 2,800 EA Precast Concrete Panels, and miles of pavement markings.
Major challenges for the project team will be removing existing pavement during nightly closures and replacing it with new concrete pavement prior to opening to live traffic the following morning. The project team will overcome these challenges by utilizing volumetric concrete batch trucks. These trucks can produce concrete that will set / reach opening age concrete strengths within 2 hours of placement. The Atkinson project team is also pursuing a means and methods proposal that will completely shift the project from a night and weekend project utilizing rapid set concrete, to a Monday to Friday daytime project working behind temporary barrier and placing concrete by traditional methods.
