Scope Of Work

The Homer City Power Plant in Homer City, Pennsylvania, has stood above the city for over 43 years. The 1,884-megawatt plant generates enough power for 2 million homes. In order to meet new federal clean air standards set for 2014, new scrubbers were added to the chimneys to cut down on air pollution.

Before upgrades were completed, Homer City Power Plant was labeled as one of the dirtiest power plants in the country; it is now one of the cleanest. The scrubbers remove 100,000 tons of sulfur dioxide emissions per year. “Bag Houses” are attached to the chimneys to remove particle matter from escaping. The dry scrubbers work by piping the plant’s exhaust emissions through a lime mix fed by adjacent silos. The mixture chemically bonds with the sulfur dioxide. The waste ash that is produced is landfilled onsite.

MEC’s scope of work included the management of crews on the installation of all ductbank, conduit, cable tray, wire and terminations associated with Novel Integrated Deacidification (NID) for Units 1 & 2. MEC managed crews relocated an existing cable tray, which feeds all units at the power plant. The work took place while maintaining an operational plant. MEC also oversaw the installation of 2 additional 23kV breakers, buss, foundations, steel and ductbank associated with the switchyard.
