Scope Of Work
Herrmann Hall:
The former Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, CA, opened 1880 and continued operation until 1942 when it was closed and the buildings were leased to the U.S. Navy. This destination resort was considered one of the finest luxury hotels in North America and drew patronage from around the country. Initially, the Navy used the site as a training facility for electronic technicians who spent the second, third, and fourth months of an eleven-month course. Later, the Hotel Del Monte became the U.S Navy Naval Postgraduate School. It is now known as Herrmann Hall and functions as administrative offices and hotel for the school.
ARG Conservation Services was retained by the general contractor to restore decorative cast stone elements at the main entrance to the building. Exposure to salt laden rain and fog had caused deterioration of the steel reinforcing imbedded in these decorative features which in turn damaged the cast stone. After loose and damaged pieces were removed from the building, they were reassembled using stainless steel pins and epoxy. Steel elements that remained in the wall were coated with high performance epoxy coatings to prevent corrosion. Once repaired, the cast stone elements were reinstalled on the building with no trace of repairs.
