Wards Island WPCP

Project Information

Project Location:
NY
Approx Contract:
$1,000,000,000
Status:
Completed
Structure Type:
Sewage / Water Treatment Plant

Scope Of Work

Wards Island WPCP is one of several Water Pollution Control Plants that are part of the City-wide Comprehensive Nitrogen Management Plan. The goal of the Plan is to reduce total nitrogen discharges and therefore improve long-term water quality in the Upper East River, Jamaica Bay, and the Long Island Sound water bodies.

Nitrogen discharges from the Upper East River and Jamaica Bay WPCPs have been identified as a contributing factor to recurring hypoxia in western Long Island Sound and portions of Jamaica Bay.

The modification to the treatment processes at Wards Island WPCP is proposed to achieve the goals of the Long Island Sound Study and to meet water quality objectives.

WDF is the first to build such a system for the NYC DEP.

The Wards Island WPCP BNR project includes work on the aeration tanks, process air system, BNR hypo-chlorination, centrate treatment, instrumentation and control systems, final tanks, activated sludge systems, odor control, self cleaning strainers and a UV disinfection system going to a froth spray system in the aeration tank. Also installed was booster pump skid for chemical dilution water for the caustic soda and sodium hypochlorite system.

On a separate plumbing project WDF installed a booster pump to service thickening with new piping system and various simplex/duplex sump pumps, hose stations and plumbing fixtures.
