The Madagascar Exhibit at the Bronx Zoo

Project Information

Project Location:
NY
Status:
Completed
Structure Type:
Park / Playground

Scope Of Work

The Madagascar Exhibit at the Bronx Zoo, 2300 Southern Boulevard, Bronx, New York, was built for the New York City Department of Design and Construction Parks and Recreation.

Designated a landmark building and funded by the Wildlife Conservatory, this 50,000 square foot project was completed in three years.

This renovation from the Lion House is a "green" building with five sources of heating consisting of geothermal, cogeneration, fuel cell, hot water and steam. All the mechanical fittings were hidden in the natural structures surrounding the exhibit's settings allowing for a truly authentic display of the regions depicted.

Adjoining the Madagascar building is the sea lion pool exhibit with a life safety system for 100,000 gallons of water with a pool sand filtration system with ozonators.

WDF Inc. worked with M.A. Angelides, Manager Hill International Inc. and the architects, Fox and Fowle.

"Madagascar! represents a dazzling reproduction of intriguing habitats on the world's fourth largest island, located off Africa's east coast and highlights the extraordinary array of exotic wildlife and the many threats and challenges to its existence."
