Scope Of Work

Fru-Con Construction, a division of Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc., is building the world's largest fixed film denitrification system at the City of Baltimore's Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant on the Patapsco River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. This is one of several expansions and upgrades at the plant that will occur during the next three years. Once completed, it will be the world's largest installed fixed-film denitrification system.

This $116 million facility will be completed in 2012 and will expand the plant's capacity from 73 to 81 million gallons per day. Fru-Con will install and commission the proprietary TETRA supplied denite system, which is designed to reduce nitrate- nitrogen to 0.5 mg/l and total suspended solids to 6 mg/l at the plants average flow rate resulting in an 80 percent reduction in the plants discharge of total nitrogen and phosphorous into the bay.

The construction includes the placement of over 30,000 cy of reinforced concrete supported on 200,000 lineal feet of pipe pile ranging in sizes from 12 inches to 24 inches in diameter. Mechanical piping, process equipment, controls and electrical work fill the completed structures along with foundation work for the enhanced nitrogen removal facility.
