Employee Safety After Dark

Employee Safety After Dark!

As the dreaded weekend approaches when Daylight Savings ends, the days are already seeming shorter. Once we officially “fall back,” it will be dark before most people even leave the office. What can a business owner do to help with employee safety after dark?

We’ll Leave the Light on for You

Be sure that employees have a well-lit path to their transportation as well as lighting in all parking areas. With the time change coming, be sure that any lighting timers account for that and come on at the right time. While parking areas are an obvious place to have lit up in the evening, think about other vulnerable spots too. Breezeways, underground tunnels and stairwells should all feel like a safe place for your employees.

Lock it Down

While access controlled doors are always a good idea for large office buildings, all businesses should think about the best way to lock things down once it gets dark out. With the cover  of darkness comes the risk of someone trying to get in to a building they might otherwise feel was too exposed. Requiring access cards for all employees to get in the facility gives some comfort to those working late hours. And keep the parking garage protected with a card reader or phone entry system. No surprise visitors. For businesses open to the public, be sure employees can lock the doors as soon as they close while they continue to clean up. They can even set the alarm so they will be alerted to anyone attempting to get in the building.

Mind your Business

Or more like, be sure others mind theirs. Discourage employees from posting on social media about working late or anything that gives away their daily routine. There are people who are just looking for crimes of opportunity who may see an employee alone at work after dark as an easy mark.  Especially if the business is in a busy area where someone could watch and wait, keep employee schedules on the down low. If your employees do stay late, be sure they have alerted a trusted someone so they will know to check in with them.

Safety After Dark

If your business keeps late hours regularly, both employees and customers will need to feel safe after dark. Security staff onsite is a good investment. You can also leverage video surveillance to keep an eye on the place and be on the lookout for any suspicious activity. We can help! Cultris Security can help with access control, video surveillance, alarms and lighting automation for your business. Call us at 281-506-8466 or visit us online today!
