Scope Of Work

Robinson Construction was chosen by the USACE Kansas City District to perform as the general contractor on a project to modify their existing 500,000 gallon, 125 foot tall, spheroid elevated water tower, making it approximately 35 feet taller.

The water tower, located on the Fort Leonard Wood military base in Pulaski County, Missouri, was previously erected in 2013 under a separate contract with Robinson Construction. Robinson performed as the general contractor on the initial project. Engineering and surveying for the initial project was completed prior to Robinson’s involvement in the project. An incorrect benchmark was recorded on the drawings, resulting in the structure not being tall enough to create adequate pressure to push the water out of the tank.

Once the cause of the tank’s lack of sufficient water pressure was determined, the USACE contracted with Robinson once again to devise a plan and make the required adjustments to the structure to get it operating efficiently. Crews cut and lifted the top portion of the 122-ton water tower utilizing two large hydraulic cranes. With the bulk of the tower suspended, the conical base was cut in order to install the extension piece. The new piece was installed and fully welded, before placing the tower on top of the extension with another full weld connection. The entire process took a little over nine hours from the time the first cut was made to the disconnecting of the rigging.
