Scope Of Work
After many delays by the initial general contractor, time became the essence in completing this project. O&G was brought on board in May 1997, and quickly became an integral part of the design time as well as the general contractor. The mission was to first finish the reconstruction and widening of I-91 at the Founders Bridge interchange; second, reconstruct the bridge itself to include a new pedestrian promenade; and third, build a landscaped, elevated platform that would link foot traffic with the shore of the Connecticut River.
The pedestrian promenade was by far the most challenging and technical structure on the project. Essentially a park on a bridge, this structure has trees and shrubs, asphalt pavers, an array of lights and architectural precast concrete seat walls and curbs. There are two elevators and a grand staircase that give pedestrians access to the bridge and terraces.
