DFW Taxiway K

Project Information

Project Location:
TX
Status:
Completed
Structure Type:
Terminal - Airport / Bus / Railroad

Scope Of Work

Over a 13-year period, Kiewit has constructed more than $132 million worth of taxiways, runways and terminals at Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport. Completed in June 1995, this $2.2 million project called for repairs to the keel section of Taxiway K, which serves as a major artery for aircraft traffic movement in-and-out of DFW International Airport terminal's east side.

The scope of work required saw-cutting existing concrete into manageable-size slabs, resulting in the removal of 15,000 square yards of 17-inch-thick concrete taxiway, in addition to reworking the subgrade prior to pouring new pavement.

Due to a critical time frame, activities were scheduled around-the-clock, six days-per-week. Day-shift crews worked primarily on preparation, saw-cutting, form setting, drilling/grouting tie bars and miscellaneous structural work. Night-shift crews performed slab removal and concrete replacement, allowing truck movements within active airfield operations to be performed during non-peak hours. By restricting hauls to nighttime hours, disruptions to airfield operations were kept to a minimum.
