Scope Of Work

Emery Sapp & Sons along with design partner Parsons Transportation were selected to construct the Columbia I-70 Bridges Design-Build project. This project involved replacing six structurally deficient bridges on I-70 and included building a “Dog Bone” roundabout at Rangeline Road and dual lane roundabouts on the north and south sides of I-70 at the Business Loop 70 Interchange. The design team also provided improvements at the three intersections of Business Loop I-70 (West Blvd), Rangeline Road (MO Route 763) and Garth Ave. This project was a big undertaking and both ESS and Parsons Transportation received numerous awards for the I-70 overhaul. Awards were graciously received from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA), American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and the Design-Build Institute of America Mid-America Region (DBIA-MAR).

The final design-build project consisted of five weathering steel plate girder bridges, six mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls, nearly 40,000 cubic yards of excavation and grading, I-70 mainline widening, and two major interchange improvements. A signature concept utilized during this project was the lateral slide-in bridge construction (SIBC). The team constructed new bridges off alignment and adjacent to the existing westbound I-70 bridges, where they were eventually slid into their final location on the existing westbound I-70 alignment.
