Our Story

Margaret (Cathy) Vogel, founder of Sunrise Safety Services Inc., started her business in June of 1995 in an 8’x12’ room in her basement. She started with $35,000.00, 4 employees, a 1979 Mercedes and a 1987 Ford Truck purchased from BARC. Cathy and her employees worked hard for many years installing pavement markings, doing traffic control and striping the highways. Sunrise was making a lasting impression within the Baltimore construction industry.

Norman Vogel, Cathy’s husband, had retired as a camera man for WJZ TV and wanted to get more involved in her business. After some research, he had found that there were only a few sign shops in the state of Maryland. Norman planned and designed what is now our Sunrise Sign Shop. Norman has since retired from Sunrise but the business has grown tremendously.

Sunrise is now housed in a 70,000 sf facility with 125 employees, a fleet of 52 Vehicles and is the largest minority owned sign fabrication shop manufacturer in the State of Maryland. We are capable of fabricating banners and stickers from any design presented to us along with temporary and permanent signage. Types of signs include traffic signs, road construction signs,  custom signs and graphics.

We have become more than just another local traffic safety control company and sign fabricator. Our teams of dedicated employees are more than co-workers, we’re a family. Every member of our team strives collectively to make Sunrise the BEST in the business. We operate and supply the tri-state area on many different projects. Chances are, if you drove past a local work area, your personal safety was already in our capable hands!

Product Info

Throughout the years we have invested time and money searching for the most reliable, cost effective and state approved traffic control devices and products on the market. We use these materials on a variety of projects and feel confident about their performance. We are a distributor for the larger manufacturers of these traffic control products.

Most of our traffic control products can be purchased but we also offer rental & installation. Those options will be listed next to the product.

Materials and Traffic Control Devices that are used on State Highway or Federal projects must be approved and listed on the Maryland QPL (Qualified Products List) or meet the NCHRP-350 or MUTCD specifications before being placed at any jobsite.

The NCHRP Report 350 is a report for testing Work Zone Appurtenances. These devices must meet an acceptable crash worthiness before being used on any roadway or highway. The NCHRP-350 has 4 categories.

Category 1: Traffic Construction Cones, barrels, delineators
Category 2: Barricades (including Type III Barricades), sign stands
Category 3: Barriers (including water filled traffic barriers and temporary traffic barriers), crash cushions (including sand filled crash cushions), Truck Mounted Attenuators
Category 4: Trailer mounted devices

NCHRP-350 & MdMUTCD follow the FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) policies. We will note in our product descriptions that the traffic control devices meet those specifications or is listed on the MD QPL.
