Our Story
A vision of success starts with quality, experienced management, and single-source control. Since beginning with just a shovel and a wheelbarrow in 1952, our customers have built their success stories with a vision. As a design-build general contractor located in Minster, Ohio, our goal at H. A. Dorsten is to turn that vision into a reality.
Part of that vision allows for growth. Throughout the years we have continued to grow right along with our industry and our customer needs. We invest in the latest technology and back it up with experienced, dedicated management and construction personnel.
A vision of success includes planning. Our team will help you create the plan and work the plan to maintain quality standards throughout the entire construction process. Our dedication to service, commitment to quality, and constant communication is unequaled.
Building and expanding any vision requires responsibility. We offer single-source control that has established us as a preferred contractor with commercial, industrial, and institutional customers throughout Ohio.
H. A. Dorsten prevents poor planning through preparedness. We utilize scheduling software to identify critical activities that affect the project completion date to help ensure time-sensitive operations are met, mitigating unforeseeable delays. Project scope is heavily influenced by a number of issues. We assist by providing detailed estimates, which can be used to assist Owner decisions. As a proactive approach to quality, we will arrange pre-installation meetings and provide full-time supervision onsite to ensure the standards and quality we demand are met throughout all phases of the project.
H. A. Dorsten takes a personal interest in the building needs of our clients. Quality counts. We continually strive to exceed expectations through quality construction, supervision, and safe and timely completion of our projects. We treat clients like they deserve to be treated. Expect no less.
We’ve been around for a while. With our firsthand knowledge of construction costs incurred throughout all phases of construction, we offer valuable input from the early design phases to the completion of the project. The experience gained since 1952, and our qualified staff of skilled professionals and craftsmen has been a valuable asset in assessing the needs of the other stakeholders involved with the project. H. A. Dorsten is worthy of your project; we know what works best – high quality construction coupled with economical value to the Owner.
Our devotion to our customers is everything. We have a firm grasp on the golden rule – treat others the way you would like to be treated. We offer a three year warranty covering failures or defects of our material and workmanship which occur during normal use of the facility. Our reputation has been built not only on our professional knowledge, but also on our culture of basic human understanding; we have been involved in ZERO legal claims since our incorporation in 1952.
We are only as strong as our weakest link. As a family owned construction firm, H. A. Dorsten realizes and appreciates the importance of customer satisfaction, loyalty, and commitment. The construction industry is highly competitive, constantly placing our integrity as a contractor on the line. H. A. Dorsten continuously strives to maintain an untarnished reputation for excellence. Our location in the heart of Midwest Ohio allows for active collaboration at the convenience of the project.
We continue commitment through our management of subcontractors. We send invitations to bid from our list of qualified Subcontractors; qualification is based on work history, financial and insurance information, and safety record. In the event a bid is received by a Subcontractor that is not familiar to our company, this Subcontractor is subject to these same pre-qualifications.
- We use AIA Standard Form of Agreement Between Contractor and Subcontractor.
- A necessary retainage percentage is withheld on all subcontracts.
- All Subcontractors are managed on the project site by our onsite project superintendent.
- Subcontractors are required to attend regular construction progress meetings when their scope of work is in discussion.
- All Subcontractors are required to adhere to our strict safety standards, as well as all OSHA requirements.
- All Subcontractor pay requests are reviewed by our project manager and project superintendent for accuracy prior to payment.
Our dedication to quality is paramount. Our efforts in providing our clients with the highest quality available have led us to become an authorized builder with Chief Buildings.
Safety is our responsibility. Being in the business of erecting and swinging steel in place leaves our company no stranger to safety. Our company has a dedicated safety director on staff who remains 100 percent committed to safety assurance and improvement. Along with conducting project safety audits, our safety director develops a site specific safety plan detailed for each individual project. Safety of our employees is of primary importance, and an integral part in the planning and operations of our company. We prove this through our acceptance into the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). Acceptance into VPP is OSHA’s official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health.
Quality is not an act, it’s a habit. H. A. Dorsten’s reputation has been built by delivering a high quality product to our clients. We ensure our employees complete all finish carpentry work. We also provide testing and inspection as required to ensure conformance to ACI, AISC, and ASTM standards. Affected work is replaced if an assessment determines a defect.
We understand the importance in knowledge of past history. Our project superintendent completes daily reports at the end of each work day documenting events of that day. Along with deliveries and labor, potential delayed work is noted.
Before anything else, preparation is key to success. Job site inspections for quality issues include a monthly walk through by our project superintendent and project manager. The Architect/Owner is invited to perform a walk through prior to completion. Any deficiencies noted during our monthly QA/QC walk are corrected in a timely manner prior to conducting a pre-final inspection. A pre-final inspection will be conducted by our project superintendent and project manager. Upon completion of items discovered in our pre-final inspection, our project manager will coordinate a final project walk through.
