Scope Of Work

Horizon and Fourth Floor Upfit: Located in Downtown Columbia, the Horizon Lab is part of the University of South Carolina’s Innovista, a public-private partnership program that serves as an incubator for fledgling high-tech companies. The project included constructing laboratories, offices and associated support spaces on approximately 45,000 square feet of shell floors within a completed five-story building. It will become a base for USC in bioscience, space science and atomic energy research. One of the biggest challenges for the CCA team  was to keep the impact on the researchers to a minimum during construction. Several major construction challenges were successfully overcome during construction.

Honors Residence Hall: The six-story, 356-room “living and learning center” provides 191,000 square feet of dormitory and study space for students in the University of South Carolina’s Honors College and Magellan Explorers learning communities. The four-wing, suite-style residence hall consists of three wings of living pods with more than 500 beds and a main building with public access. Each living pod houses a common living space for up to 12 students who live in single- or double-occupancy bedrooms. Semi-private restrooms are shared by two to four students. Amenities on the first floor of the main building include a full-service cafeteria, vending area, equipped kitchen, laundry room, indoor bicycle room with shower and a game room. The Honors Learning Center features three lecture-style classrooms and a conference room. The Honors Residence Hall is USC’s first Gold LEED-certified building. LEED features include high-efficiency plumbing fixtures, recycled material and the outfitting of all south-facing windows with “light shelves” to limit unwanted heat.

Discovery I Health Sciences Research Building: Located in downtown Columbia, Discovery I is part of Innovista, a public-private partnership program that aims at nurturing high-tech companies. The project consists of approximately 58,000 square feet of office, wet laboratory and dry laboratory upfits in the partially occupied five-story Discovery I Biomedical Research shell building on the USC Columbia campus. Significant portions of the work include partitions, finishes, laboratory equipment and furnishings and mechanical equipment.

Aiken Convocation Center & Lecture Hall: The University of South Carolina Aiken Convocation Center and Lecture Hall, a 100,000-square-foot facility with retractable seating occupancy of up to 4,000, opened in 2007 and is home of Pacer Athletics. The state-of-the art facility provides gathering space for University athletic events and ceremonies and doubles as a venue for community and entertainment events. The building contains multiple locker rooms, a student athlete study center, special VIP area and USCA Athletics Department offices. As home of Pacer Athletics, the convocation center also features a USCA Pacer Walk and Hall of Fame highlighting past Pacer greats. Two practice courts that can be used for private meetings, business functions, conventions or other special events also were part of the project.
