The Flooring Station was founded under the name Gold River Floors in Rancho Cordova by Jeff and Meridith Krekelberg in 1991. Six years later, Gold River Floors joined Carpet One Floor & Home, the largest cooperative of floor covering retailers in North America. And in 2008 joined Flooring America, a cooperative of more than 500 independent retailers in North America.

In 2022, Jeff and Meridith retired and The Flooring Station was acquired by Teamshares and became employee-owned. Workers now own nearly 25 percent of the business.
